Comparing a Supportive Type Orthotic to a Proprioceptive Insole

- Supportive type orthotics (with built in arch supports) weaken the muscles of the foot (see animation below) and may have little or no impact on improving postural stability.

- Clinical examination of the above patient revealed a dramatic weakness of the peroneal longus and anterior tibialis muscles (disuse atrophy).
- An electromyographic study demonstrated a decreased excursion (activity) of the peroneal longus and anterior tibialis muscles when the supportive orthotics were worn.
